Ranbir Kapoor clarifies “last decade as an actor” remark; plans directorial debut in 2-3 years

Ranbir Kapoor has spoken about his plans to move behind the camera, revealing that he hopes to make his directorial debut within the next two to three years. In a recent interview with BBC Asian Network alongside his Ramayana co-star Sai Pallavi, the actor also suggested that the coming decade could be his last playing the kind of demanding lead roles he currently takes on.

Discussing his packed schedule and aspirations as a filmmaker, Ranbir said, “I guess, it’s my last decade as an actor; will I get to play these parts? I do want to kind of pivot towards direction.” His remark appeared to take Sai Pallavi by surprise, prompting her to respond, “Ohhh...” and seek clarification.

Ranbir then explained that he was referring to the kind of roles he currently gets to play, rather than announcing an immediate retirement from acting. “What I mean is where I can get to play these parts,” he clarified, referring to films such as Ramayana.

This is not the first time Ranbir has spoken about wanting to direct. During an Instagram Live session in September 2025, he revealed that he had started a writers' room and was developing two ideas. “I am dying to direct a movie,” he had said, adding that filmmaking was on his to-do list for the next couple of years.

While Ranbir has not announced a directorial project yet, his latest comments indicate that he is actively working towards that goal.
