R. Madhavan opens up about redefining parenting in today’s generation while discussing the themes of De De Pyaar De 2

De De Pyaar De 2 recently released in theatres, arriving six years after the first film and bringing back Ajay Devgn and Rakul Preet Singh while introducing R. Madhavan in a key role. In an exclusive conversation with IMDb, Devgn and Madhavan discussed how their mutual understanding, improvisation, and easy rapport helped shape their performances. They also spoke about the film’s take on generational differences and the changing acceptance of modern relationships.

Speaking about their long-standing equation, Devgn said, “Working with Maddy felt effortless. We’re more like friends. He’s a fabulous actor, and that always helps. The rapport we share makes every scene better because there’s a tuning, an understanding. I know what he is going to do, he knows what I am going to do, and it works very well.”

Madhavan added, “Ajay sir has a body of work that’s awe-inspiring. On set, his devotion to the subject gives you the freedom to work the way you want. There’s a scene in this film where he doesn’t speak at all—it's just Rakul and me in a dramatic conversation. Without saying a word, he delivers exactly what the moment needs with a simple turn and silence. For me, that felt like going to university.”

Reflecting on why the story of De De Pyaar De 2 resonates with contemporary audiences, Madhavan said, “When relationships like these were uncommon, they were looked down upon. Back then, this film would have been considered radical. Today, differences don’t matter as much, but if you’re an old-timer, it’s still difficult to accept. As a father, I find it hard to understand how to behave in a modern way. I grew up with values that shaped who I am, but I can’t apply them to my son in the same way. I have to redefine my own parenting rules so I can have the same impact on him that my parents had on me. This film explores what happens if a situation like this arises in a family and offers possible approaches, which makes it even more engaging.”

Devgn also shared his perspective on generational conflict, saying, “Today’s youth believe they have the right to make their own choices. You cannot deny or defy them. In today’s society, relationships like these are not exactly taboo, but they do create conflict. There are different points of view, and neither is completely right or wrong. Both have their pluses and minuses, and that conflict is very interesting.”
