Nana Patekar on making debut as a lyricist, “I am from JJ School of Arts, I know how to transform pictures into words”

Veteran actor Nana Patekar has made his debut as a lyricist for the Marathi music album named Nana Chhand. The launch for the same took place last night in Mumbai amidst the presence of a number of dignitaries from the Marathi movie and music world. The occasion was also a celebration of 25 years of Sagarika Music, the label that has come up with Nana Chhand.

During the event, when Patekar was asked how he turned into a lyricist at this stage of his career, he said, “Once we move away from the city and start living near a farm, we get a lot of thoughts. Not as a song or poetry but the sights of nature we see in front of us, we copy them on paper. As I am from JJ School of Arts, I know how to transform those pictures into words. So, I tried doing that. It’s conducive to do this sitting among the farms. Else, staying here among the four walls, you can’t manage that.”

Sharing his process of writing lyrics and what it means to him, Patekar added, “It’s actually something you have hidden inside, and you copy that on paper. Fortunately for us actors, the things that are stored inside, we portray (on screen), whether it is happiness or sadness. After watching it, you feel, ‘Wow, what amazing acting this is.’ Actually, we are just selling our feelings. The same goes for poetry. You portray all that’s stored inside you.”

Nana Chhand contains three songs, all written by Patekar. These include, ‘Gandh Tujhya Pavalancha’, ‘Hirava Harava Paus Ala’ and ‘Dahivar’. The songs are sung by well-known names like Rahul Deshpande, Vaishali Samant and Swapnil Bandodkar.

The music has been composed by Nilesh Moharir. Patekar revealed the advice he had given to Moharir for this album. “I told him to ensure that people don’t recognize that it’s your song. At times, I can identify your song while listening. It is fun when you wipe off your identity,” he said.

The event was also graced by the CEO (Chief Executive Officer) of Sagarika Music, Sagarika Das, along with well-known names like Sachin Pilgaonkar, Suresh Wadkar, among others. Pilgaonkar said about Patekar’s new chapter saying, “I am very happy that people will now get to know that my friend is also a poet, and they will enjoy that side of his too.”
